Chojna Augustinian Abbey
Augustinian monks first came to Chojna (German: Königsberg) in 1290 and erected an abbey on the eastern outskirts of the town. The church was consecrated in 1388. The monks made their living by pastoral work and awarding letters of indulgence, as well as through donations, gifts and landholdings. 1539 saw the official dissolution of the abbey as part of the Reformation. From 1557 the abbey served as a church, drill hall, storage depot, hospital and gymnasium. The Catholic Church acquired the site in 1957 and has been dedicated to its reconstruction since 1959.
Of the original complex, the church, the south and west wings of the enclosure building and parts of the cloister remain intact. In addition, several ancillary buildings and the “New House”, dating from the 15th century, belonged to the complex. The abbey was destroyed in the World War II and subsequently rebuilt in the 1960s by the Catholic Church. Today, the former abbey church is a publicly accessible parish church.
Chojna is located in the Lower Oder Valley International Park, 7.5 miles from the Polish-German border. Its historical centre counts among the region’s main attractions. A 13th century fieldstone chapel, used by the Commanderies of the Hospitallers and the Templars, is situated in the neighbouring village of Rurka. The Cistercian nunnery in Cedynia is just 12.5 miles away.
Highlights include the single-naved, 14th century Gothic brick church, the cloister vaults and the chapel. Also impressive are the stellar vaults in the chapter house and the 18th century church organ, built by renowned German organ maker Joachim Wagner.
